Shelby offers a rural lifestyle with proximity to major urban centers and vacation destinations throughout the Carolinas. The town is 50 minutes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. In an hour and 15 minutes, residents can be in the Greenville/ Spartanburg area of South Carolina or in the North Carolina mountain town of Asheville.
 
Shelby’s uptown central business district is a Nationally Registered Historic District and features wide sidewalks and large oak trees. City Park has a restored 1919 antique carrousel. The Earl Scruggs Center: Music and Stories from the American South is located in the restored Greek revival Cleveland County courthouse and honors the late Cleveland County musician and banjo player. Area attractions include Kings Mountain National Military Park, Cowpens National Battlefield and Gardner Webb University, a private Christian university less than 10 miles away.

In August, Shelby hosts the American Legion Baseball World Series for four days, attracting ballplayers from across the country. More recently, the area’s scenic landscape was chosen as a film location for parts of the first movie installment of “The Hunger Games.”
