About York

Nestled in the fertile Susquehanna River Valley of South Central Pennsylvania, York provides both big city amenities and small town charm. This city of more than 40,000 residents was named after York, England, and it is part of a county of the same name, which is home to more than 430,000.

York’s history extends back to the year 1741, when it was founded by settlers from the Philadelphia area. It is sometimes described as the first capital of the United States, as the Continental Congress convened there from 1777 to 1778, a period of time that included the passage of the Articles of Confederation and the first proclamation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Modern York retains much of its original character, as the city is home to four historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as numerous individual buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Residents have a wide variety of ways to spend their free time. The annual York Fair is a historic event that was first celebrated in 1765, and it claims to be the oldest fair in America. Performers stage plays and events and perform live music at the Stand-Capitol Performing Arts Center and the York Little Theater. York is also home to a professional baseball team, the York Revolution, and an indoor football team, the York Capitols. The local Harley Davidson factory presents displays of historic motorcycles and tours of its production line. Those interested in the outdoors can enjoy boating and fishing at Lake Redman, hiking and picnicking at William H. Kain County Park, viewing displays of holiday lights at Rocky Ridge Park, and golfing, skating, or snow tubing at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Numerous home styles are available in York, running the architectural gamut from eclectic to Victorian. The crime rate and cost of living are both low, and institutions such as York College of Pennsylvania and Penn State York provide opportunities for higher education. Incentives such as tax abatements and an artist homestead program make York the ideal location to start a new business.
