The skyline of Pittsburgh is revealed in an iconic burst to visitors who enter the city through the Fort Pitt Tunnel as they emerge onto the bridge that carries them to the Point, where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the mighty Ohio. Incorporated as a borough in 1794, Pittsburgh has expanded beyond the Point in all directions, with hundreds of bridges linking the rivers, creeks, and valleys between and within its many neighborhoods.
An important piece of real estate from the start, the Point was the site of Fort Duquesne, which was the center of conflict in the French and Indian War and became Fort Pitt after the British victory. In the early years of the United States, Pittsburgh was the original “Gateway to the West” and a shipbuilding center, where the first steamboat was built in 1811. Later, industries such as glass and iron production emerged. Andrew Carnegie began producing steel in the area in 1875. All along, the rivers played an important role and were regarded primarily as an industrial asset.
In the wake of a changing, post-industrial economy, Pittsburgh is frequently lauded as an example of innovation and economic diversification, and the steel industry remains a part of that. Companies either headquartered in Pittsburgh or with a strong presence in the area include U.S. Steel, PPG, PNC, The Kraft Heinz Company, DICKS Sporting Goods, WESCO International, Alcoa, Bayer, American Eagle Outfitters, and Google.
Pittsburgh is known for its strong educational system, and emerging industries such as robotics and biomedical technology, along with cutting-edge medical care, are advanced by affiliations between universities and private enterprise. The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Point Park University, Duquesne University, Chatham University, and Carlow University are all located in the city.
Major league sports play a major role in Pittsburgh, which has been known as the City of Champions since the 1970s, when the Pirates won two World Series titles and the Steelers won their first four Super Bowl victories. The Penguins have also contributed to the luster with three Stanley Cup titles.

Once called “hell with the lid off” due to its heavily polluted air and water, Pittsburgh offers boating, kayaking, rowing, and fishing on its rivers.
