About Toronto

Located on the border of Ohio and West Virginia, and 45 minutes from Pittsburgh, Toronto is bordered by the Ohio River on one side and Ohio State Route 7 on the other. It was formerly known first as Newburg’s Landing and Thomas Sloan’s Station before civic father Thomas M. Daniels proposed a change to the current name in honor of Toronto, Canada, which he believed to be an area worth emulating.

In the 20th century, Toronto has hosted many large factories in and around town, making it a center of heavy industry. Today the major Toronto employer is TIMET, the world’s largest supplier of titanium-based metal products.

A bedroom community, Toronto offers a restored historic downtown area, some well-maintained parks, and an abundance of affordable single-family homes. The Toronto City School District was rated “Excellent” by the Ohio Department of Education in 2012, based on an evaluation of Ohio graduates and achievement test scores, and the Toronto High School is a member of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. Annual events such as an art festival and a Christmas parade foster a sense of community among residents.
