About Oakmont

Nestled on the southern bank of the Allegheny River, the borough of Oakmont celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2014. The area was first settled in 1816, and it took its name from a large black oak tree that served as a local landmark. It consists of 1.57 square miles of hills and woodlands, and is approximately 14 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh.

Gas lit streetlamps line the red brick boulevard that serves as this sidewalk community’s central thoroughfare, guiding you through a charming business district hosting an assortment of boutique shops, full-service restaurants, and local service providers. Residents can check out a good book in the local branch of the Carnegie Library, watch a movie at the Oaks Theater, or sample a tasty treat from Oakmont Bakery, which was named Retail Bakery of the Year by Modern Baking magazine.

Oakmont’s most famous local landmark is historic Oakmont Country Club, which holds the distinction of hosting the U.S. Open more than any other golf course in America. The course, which first opened in 1903, is regarded as one of the most challenging in America, and luminaries such as Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus are among the champions who successfully tested their mettle on its undulating greens.

Residents in need of fresh air can take advantage of the facilities of Riverside Park, which include tennis and basketball courts, a track, a playground, and picnic pavilions, or enjoy fishing and boating on the Allegheny River. The Riverside School District provides a quality education to local children, and a newly completed 1,600-foot-long bridge makes it easy to access the Fox Chapel area and all the communities connected to Route 28.

Many different types of homes are available in Oakmont, from stately Colonials and inviting Ranches to low-maintenance options like townhomes and condominium units. Some remaining 19th-century homes help preserve the community’s original charm and character, including the Dr. Thomas R. Kerr House, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
