About the North Side

The North Side is a unique and vibrant neighborhood a short distance to the north of downtown Pittsburgh, just across the Allegheny River. It is one of the oldest sections of the city, and many of its homes date back to the 19th century.

Originally known as the town of Allegheny, it was first settled in 1787, and it was incorporated as a borough in 1828, and then as a city in 1840, before ultimately being annexed by the city of Pittsburgh in 1907. Numerous reminders of the area’s past remain, and one section known as the Mexican War Streets is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The land for this district was owned by General William Robinson, Jr., and after returning from service in the Mexican-American War in 1848, he laid out its streets and named them after the battles and generals of that conflict.

Both the Mexican War Streets and the North Side as a whole feature a large number of Victorian row houses, which have been restored and updated with loving care. The residents are a close-knit community, with an annual Mexican War Streets House & Garden Tour serving as a point of pride. The area also features a growing commercial corridor with shops and restaurants, tree-lined streets, community gardens, and works of public art. The Mattress Factory, a museum presenting room-sized displays of contemporary art, is another North Side landmark, and the Andy Warhol Museum and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh are only a few blocks away.

The southern border of the North Side runs along the northern edge of Allegheny Commons, an 80-acre park that is the oldest in Pittsburgh, leading residents to joke that the park’s green space is the community’s “front yard.” Allegheny Commons is also the home of the National Aviary, the largest in the country, which contains more than 150 species of birds from around the world. In fair weather, you can follow walking and biking trails, enjoy boating or kayaking on the rivers, cheer for Pitt, the Steelers, or the Pirates at football or baseball games, or take advantage of all that downtown Pittsburgh has to offer.
