About Mars
In 1882, Mars, Pennsylvania came to be in southern Butler County. Located about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh, this quaint town has much to offer.
Founded by Samuel Parks, Mars started out as one home with a water-powered gristmill along the Breakneck Creek. With his friend Samuel Marshall, Parks established a post office in his home, with a railroad going through the area soon to follow. The USS Mars gained its name from the borough and became a part of the United States Pacific Fleet. The boat was decommissioned in 1963. The bell from the ship was donated to Mars and is now memorialized in the downtown park. The unofficial mascot of Mars is the “Alien,” due to the association with the planet. The alien can be seen in many storefront windows around town.
Mars offers a real small-town feel, with locals frequenting the local diner named Jimmy’s Strip District Grill, bowling at Mars Lanes, or grabbing a book at the Mars Area Public Library. The borough features events throughout the seasons such as Fourth of July celebrations and an Applefest in the fall that offers fun, food, and shopping. Mars Area School District has K-12 education for area residents, and Butler County Community College, or BC3, provides higher education to those who seek it.
With close access to Routes 228 and 8, Interstate 79, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it’s a quick commute to Pittsburgh and Cranberry Township. Pittsburgh International Airport is a 45-minute drive away and offers numerous national and international flights. Pittsburgh is home to a bus station run by Greyhound that boasts many destinations.
