Biltmore Forest, located alongside Asheville, NC, is one of the wealthiest towns in the country. The town of Biltmore Forest was first incorporated in 1923, and became a historic preservation district in 1990. Today, with its swan-necked streetlights and thickly wooded lots, Biltmore Forest is home to some of the largest estates and is one of the most desirable areas in which to live. Biltmore Forest real estate typically ranges between $500,000 to $6,000,000.
The grandeur of the Biltmore Estate made Asheville appealing to the wealthy, drawing the rich and famous to the area in the 1910s and 1920s. As a result, a number of residential subdivisions emerged that remain as some of the older, more established neighborhoods in Asheville. In the late 1920s, Mrs. Vanderbilt sold 1,600 acres to establish a luxurious suburb with spacious lots and modern amenities. This area became known as the Town of Biltmore Forest, a low-density, master-planned community that captures the characteristics of Biltmore Estate's first architect and planner, Frederick Law Olmsted.
Biltmore Forest is one of south Asheville's oldest and finest golf course communities, featuring a Donald Ross-designed 18-hole golf course and, of course, the prestigious Biltmore Forest Country Club. The Town of Biltmore Forest maintains two parks: Rosebank Park and Greenwood Park. According to the town, "The attention to detail and environment that were so prominent during the development of the Town has been preserved by virtue of residential zoning designations and conscientious zoning restrictions. Conservation of the naturalistic landscaping, designed with the same influences as the Biltmore Estate, has been possible through the adoption of a tree protection ordinance and community forestry programs."
