About Beachwood
Approximately 10 miles to the east of downtown Cleveland, Beachwood is a vibrant community with easy access to all the best things the region has to offer. Originally a part of now-defunct Warrensville Township, it seceded in 1915, and subsequently grew into the thriving city that it is today. Beachwood’s name is a reference to the beech trees that once covered the majority of the area. A popular story holds that its current spelling is the result of a careless mistake by a government clerk who misspelled its name as “Beach” on some official documents, and the revised name subsequently stuck.
Beachwood is home to the corporate headquarters of aluminum manufacturer Aleris, real estate investment trust DDR Corp., and software company TOA Technologies, as well as a new 600,000 square foot campus for Eaton, a power management corporation. The Cleveland Jewish News is a weekly newspaper based in Beachwood, and University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. Upscale shopping is available at Beachwood Place, which benefits from a prime location on the I-271 corridor.
The Beachwood City Schools are very well regarded. Hilltop Elementary School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education in 2015, and both Beachwood High School and Beachwood Middle School have also received the same award in the recent past. The district has gone out of its way to incorporate technology into its curriculum, as each middle and high school student receives a Chromebook, which facilitates collaborative work and reduces the need for physical textbooks and paperwork.
Local residents have numerous ways to spend their spare time. The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage offers interactive and multimedia exhibits on the Jewish experience in America, displays of religious art and artifacts, and a rotating series of special exhibitions. Another notable local institution is Canterbury Golf Club, which has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 golf courses in America. Preston’s H.O.P.E. is the largest fully accessible playground and park in Northeast Ohio, letting children of all abilities play together, and city facilities include multi-purpose trails, wood boardwalks, a sledding hill, and an aquatic center.
