About Shrewsbury
A borough in York County, Shrewsbury is situated in the Allegheny Mountains and the Susquehanna Valley agricultural region just four miles above the Mason-Dixon Line. The borough’s proximity to the border of Maryland and access to I-83 provide for an easy commute to various destinations.
Some places of interest in Shrewsbury include the Mason-Dixon Line, a historic border marked by a concrete post indicating where slaves became free as they crossed from Maryland into Pennsylvania. Local farmers frequently share stories about the portion of the Underground Railroad that ran between the two states. There’s also the Shrewsbury Historic District with 152 contributing buildings, including some log dwellings built prior to 1800, the Odd Fellows Hall, and two Romanesque Revival churches.
For outdoor activities, try the Charles Sweeney Memorial Park, which contains a baseball field, basketball courts, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and more. The Rail Trail for biking, running, walking, and sightseeing is another great option. Shrewsbury features plenty of shopping areas with seven different centralized options: the Antique Center, which sells antiques and houses other small boutique stores; the Markets at Shrewsbury, where various locally grown foods are sold, including Amish goods, the Market Square; with restaurants, banks, a liquor store, and other attractions; Mason-Dixon Farmers Market, which offers fresh crabs from Chesapeake Bay in the summer; Shrewsbury Commons; Shrewsbury Square; and Stonebridge Plaza, all of which can been seen from I-83.
The Southern York County School District serves Shrewsbury with five schools. At the high school, students are able to attend York County School of Technology for construction and mechanical trades training.
Shrewsbury’s affordable real estate market is highly desirable, given its proximity to Maryland, and has contributed to the area becoming a popular relocation spot for Baltimore and even Washington, D.C. residents. Over the past 20 years, its population has grown rapidly.
