Jackson is a beautiful city in south central Michigan, conveniently located only 35 miles south of Lansing and 40 miles west of Ann Arbor. Jackson is often regarded as the birthplace of the Republican Party. In 1854 it was the host city for that group’s first official meeting, at which they selected a slate of candidates for state elections. The side of their outdoor meeting, known as “Under the Oaks”, is commemorated by a state historical marker. Tours are held throughout the year, informing visitors and curious residents about the area’s heritage in areas like the railroad, car industry, corset making and Michigan’s first prison.
