Canton’s economy is fueled by the energy industry. As a result of major energy exploration in southeastern Ohio and the widespread investment and development in the Utica Shale deposits, companies in Stark County, like Chesapeake Energy, are supporting ancillary industries like tank trailer manufacturing, pipe manufacturing, water transportation companies, engineering firms, land acquisition and leasing companies, pipe fitters, welders and lodging. The area is dramatically growing; Baker-Hughes Company, Mills Industrial Park, and Old Dominion Trucking have all expanded into the Canton area. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on land leases and mineral rights, resulting in a hundred new millionaires who were once simple farmers, and abundant job opportunities for residents.
The greater Canton area is famous for many things, but one of the more prominent structures is the Professional Football Hall of Fame, which just completed a $27 million expansion project, with additional renovations coming in the future. Universities located in Canton include Kent State Stark, Stark State, Malone, Mount Union and Aultman Nursing, to name a few. Major medical facilities include Aultman, Mercy Medical, Affinity, and many affiliated emergency branches.
Stark County has over 20 golf courses, and business owners have invested heavily in a Canton Arts District and the Canton Museum of Art.
