About Harrisburg

Pennsylvania’s state capital, Harrisburg, offers the amenities of an urban metropolis while still maintaining the unique personality of Central Pennsylvania.
Harrisburg contains beautiful architecture, and the unique capitol building was dedicated in 1906. Its style boasts Greek, Roman and Victorian influences. In fact, Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome is the inspiration for the stunning dome. During its centennial year, the Capitol was declared a National Historic Landmark.

Harrisburg is home to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, the United States’ largest free indoor agricultural exposition. Founded in 1917, the show is held annually in January. In 2011, it featured over 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibits.

Several interesting attractions, including The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, The Forum, National Civil War Museum, Reservoir Park and the Susquehanna Art Museum can all be found here. The city is also home to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

Over ten institutions of higher education can be found in the Harrisburg vicinity. Included in the list are Gettysburg College, founded in 1832, and the Widener University School of Law. The law school boasts the highest rate of graduates admitted in the Pennsylvania Bar.

The city was named as the second-best place in the U.S. to raise a family in 2012 and was among the top paying spots to work. Harrisburg was also ranked by The Daily Beast as one of the twenty “recession-proof” regions across the U.S., due in part to the high number of state and federal agencies it hosts.

With all that the area has to offer, it’s easy to recognize why Harrisburg has been named not once but twice as an “All-American City.”
