Chippewa Township was formed in January 1816 when the Beaver County Court divided South Beaver Township and Ohio Township into four townships. One township was called Adams for Dr. Samuel Adams. The township name soon changed to Chippewa, which comes from the Indian word Chipwayanwok, meaning tailskins.

Fun facts about Chippewa Township:

–McKinley School #3 is a former one-room school which is open today as a historical site. Students were taught there from 1879 to 1929, and then students went to Chippewa Elementary School.

-The first business was McLauglin’s Blacksmith Shop, located at the corner of Blackhawk and Winterburn Roads in 1901.

-The Beaver County Airport was dedicated in 1953. It is a general aviation reliever airport with a single runway. Flight training and controller training take place at the site. The Air Heritage Museum is located at the airport, and it features aviation from the early days to the present.

-The township is home to the I.S. and Gertrude Sahli Nature Park, a green space for protection of natural resources for enjoyment by the public for low-impact recreation and environmental education
