About North Royalton
North Royalton, founded in 1818, is located in the southern part of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Knight Sprague, an early settler, had the township named after his native town in Vermont. Sometime between 1880 and 1890, the name of Royalton was changed to North Royalton because another town in Ohio, south of Columbus, had the same name.
The city maintains much of its small-town charm while being a short 20 minutes from Cleveland and 30 minutes from Akron. The city is located within minutes of three highways, Interstates 77, 71 and 480, so access to big-city amenities, including world-class hospitals, shopping, major league sports, and entertainment is very convenient.
The city has over 200 businesses, manufacturing and professional services. Founded in 1918, The North Royalton Chamber of Commerce sponsors an Annual State of the City Address, a Golf Outing, and the North Royalton City Schools Annual Community Report, as well as The Community Festival, Festival Pageant and a parade. The local newspaper, The Royalton Recorder, is over 70 years old ahd has a bi-monthly circulation of 16,000.
North Royalton is an ideal bedroom community for both Cleveland and Akron, and as such has committed its resources to creating a vibrant hometown feel and an excellent school system. The North Royalton School District serves students ranging from first graders to high school seniors; two additional schools also serve grades K-8.
The North Royalton Family YMCA/UH Parma Medical Center Facility is a state-of-the-art fitness, recreation and health facility that serves the entire community. Membership currently exceeds projections, making it one of the busiest YMCA locations in northeast Ohio. The facility features an aquatic center with an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, whirlpool spa and sauna, along with a gym and fitness center. The center offers classes and services for everyone from toddlers to seniors. The University Hospitals Parma Medical Center also operates a therapy center inside the YMCA facility.
Adjacent to the YMCA in a campus-like setting is the new home of the North Royalton branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, a 30,000 square-foot facility, which opened in August 2013. The new library is more than double the size of the original North Royalton library and offers patrons access to computers, private meeting and office spaces, a café, a gaming area in the teen section, a wing for children, plus reading nooks and a drive-through service.
