About Newport News

Newport News was founded by the early colonists of Jamestown and dates back to at least 1621. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and located on the Virginia Peninsula at the southeastern end, on the north shore of the James River. It remained a rural area until after the Civil War, when railroads and shipbuilding moved in. Newport News Shipbuilding, originally known as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company, is the largest shipbuilder in the United States and a major economic force in the Hampton Roads area.

Newport News also enjoys a reputation as a vacation destination and has a booming tourism industry, catering to people of all ages and lifestyles. Sunny beaches and abundant natural parks give outdoor enthusiasts plenty of places to explore or simply relax. Shopping centers and endless dining options can be found throughout the city. There are several museums, amusement parks, arts centers and theaters for people to enjoy. Annual events and festivals held throughout the year provide wonderful opportunities for people of the community to come together and celebrate.

Both semi-professional and high school sports, particularly football, are big in Newport News. Students are actively involved in sports from a young age and are encouraged to participate in the local leagues. The community is served by Newport News Public Schools, whose motto is “College, Career & Citizen-Ready,” and there are five high schools. A city stadium provides the home venue for all of the high school football teams, with up to five home games spread over three nights during football season.
