Newport News was founded by the early colonists of Jamestown and dates back to at least 1621. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and located on the Virginia Peninsula at the southeastern end, on the north shore of the James River. It remained a rural area until after the Civil War, when railroads and shipbuilding moved in. Newport News Shipbuilding, originally known as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company, is the largest shipbuilder in the United States and a major economic force in the Hampton Roads area.
