JOHNSTOWN, PA

Johnstown is a city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, 60 miles (97 km) miles east of Pittsburgh and 47 miles (76 km) west-south west of Altoona, Pennsylvania.

From 1834 to 1854, the city was a port and key transfer point along the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. Canal boats, having been transported over the mountains were re-floated here, to continue the trip by water to Pittsburgh and the Ohio Valley. Completion of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1854, took away the canal's cargo and passenger business.

With the canal's demise, iron, coal, and steel quickly became central to the town of Johnstown. By 1860, Johnstown was the leading steel producer in the United States. Through the second half of the 19th century, Johnstown prospered from demand in the western United States for barbed wire.

In 2006, Gamesa, a wind energy company, opened its first U.S. wind turbine blade manufacturing facility near here. Lockheed Martin is relocating a facility to Johnstown in fall of 2008. A new 100,000 square foot Regional Technology Complex will house a division of Northrop Grumman and other tenants, signaling the increasing growth of Johnstown's economy. The high tech defense industry is now a primary staple of the Johnstown economy.

Johnstown remains a regional medical, educational, and communications center. As in many other locales, healthcare provides significant employment opportunities within the city.

The city has enjoyed the "The Friendly City" designation as Johnstown has reinvented itself as a result of efforts to economically diversify and enhance its image with industries based on new technologies and resource based tourism.

The Johnstown region is proud of its strong heritage, its strong work ethic and its strong sense of community. Tourism-based, as well as technology-based, strategies are making the region a great place to live, work and play.
