Erie is a city in Erie County on the coast of Lake Erie, the world’s 13th largest natural lake. Erie PA celebrated its bicentennial in 1995 with the construction of a 187 foot tower which overlooks the city to its south, Presque Isle bay and Presque Isle peninsula beyond which forms Erie’s port. The crystal clear waters of Lake Erie at Presque Isle offers year-round recreation to over 4 million visitors each year who come from around the world to enjoy its seven miles of natural beaches, 21 miles of hiking trails, a 10 mile long paved recreational trail, world class fishing and 3200 acres of natural beauty. For the boaters there are four launching areas in the park for both non-powered and registered powered crafts as well as internal ponds and canals to be enjoyed from a canoe or row-boat. Near the entrance to Presque Isle visitors can stop at the newly opened Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). Named for Erie’s favorite son, the center teaches the history and environmental aspects of Presque Isle, a research center, and a visitor’s center all in one facility. TREC is open all year-round with free admission.
