Founded near the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1825, Akron’s early growth was because of its location. It began as a village on the divide between the St. Lawrence Seaway and Mississippi River. An adjacent village changed its name from Cascade to North Akron, which developed to provide increased waterpower. South Akron was created to serve people using the Ohio Canal. In 1836 the two villages became one community.
