Annie Hanna Engel

Chief Legal Counsel
In January 2005, Annie Engel became Chief Legal Counsel of Howard Hanna Company. In this position, her focus has been on real estate transaction litigation, Insurance defense and coverage, licensee ethics compliance, municipal compliance and various corporate matters. She also teaches real estate licensing continuing education courses in both ethics and the liability of the real estate transaction. She has recently published several articles on sales agreement negotiations, an article on seller’s disclosures and the role of the licensee, and is the co-editor of the Barrister’s Bugle - a legal real estate publication.
In May 2010, Annie undertook leadership of Howard Hanna Insurance Services, bringing an in depth knowledge of insurance law and policy to the company. Howard Hanna Insurance Services is recognized regionally and nationally by the insurance industry, as well as by the real estate industry. REALTrends, the real estate consulting and communications company considered to be the leading source of real estate news, trends, and analysis, ranks Howard Hanna Insurance the #1 real estate insurance company in the United States based on 2009 and 2010 production. The company has received Agency of the Year awards from both Travelers and Harleysville Insurance companies over the past 8 years, the President’s Award from SAFECO in 2011, as well as being named a member of their H K Dent Society, and was honored as a member of Traveler’s Insurance Company’s Leadership Council (TLC). Also in 2011, Howard Hanna Insurance agents were honored as KAPS, Key Agency Personnel, by Westfield Insurance Company.
A graduate of Dickinson College, The University of Pittsburgh School of Law (J.D.), and the University of Connecticut School of Law (LL.M., Insurance Law), Annie was formerly the Manager of Graduate Studies at the University of the Connecticut School of Law and Deputy Director of the Insurance Law Center. She was instructor of law, teaching Principles of Insurance as well as Insurance Regulation. Prior to her work at the University of Connecticut Law School, Annie’s practice of law in Pittsburgh and Connecticut focused on corporate insurance defense and coverage matters.
She is a member of the Bar in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Connecticut. Annie also holds her real estate broker’s licenses in Pennsylvania and in Florida and is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh XXIII.
Serving as a board member of St. Lucy's Auxiliary, a member of the Allegheny Conference Work Force committee, a member of the CLO Corporate Circles Board and as Co-Chair of the 2012 Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Spring Hat Luncheon, keeps Annie actively involved in the Pittsburgh community.
