About Whitehall

A borough in Allegheny County roughly six miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Whitehall is considered part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area but has also been a Home Rule community since 1975. Whitehall is governed by seven council members and a mayor. Fire and ambulance services are provided by the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company and the Medical Rescue Team South Authority, respectively.

The origins of Whitehall’s name are reputed as hailing from two possible sources: a tavern on Brownsville Road that was renamed in the 1850s to “White Hall” and is now located in Brentwood, or because the land the borough occupies used to be known as “Whitehall Driving Park.”

Until 1946, Whitehall was part of Baldwin Township. By 1948, Whitehall had separated from the township and become an independent municipality. Today, Whitehall offers a variety of recreational activities and shopping opportunities from the 15-acre municipal complex, with a swimming and wading pool, tennis courts, and community rooms, to Caste Village, a shopping center with a strip mall. Six ball fields and various playgrounds are found throughout the borough, along with two private country clubs: the Whitehall Country Club, which offers additional swimming and tennis facilities, and the South Hills Country Club, which offers golfing, dining, swimming, and social activities. Transportation to downtown Pittsburgh and throughout Whitehall is convenient, with Pennsylvania Route 51 running through the borough and four county bus lines servicing it.

Whitehall’s public library has been recognized as one of the top 25 libraries in the state due to its Hennen American Public Library 90th percentile Rating (HAPLR), and the borough itself was also named as “One of the Two Most Livable Communities in Metropolitan Pittsburgh” by PHH Technologies Services.

Whitehall is serviced by the Baldwin-Whitehall School District. Homes in Whitehall primarily consist of single-family residences, with many apartments and townhomes also available in the area.
