About Tionesta
Named after a Native American word meaning “home of the wolves,” Tionesta is a borough in Forest County, Pennsylvania. Tionesta is situated 54 miles from Erie and 78 from Pittsburgh along the senic Allegheny River, offering the benefits of small-town life with easy access to wild forest lands. Howard Zahniser, an American environmental activist who led the Wilderness Society and authored the Wilderness Act of 1964, grew up in Tionesta.
Some places of interest found in and around Tionesta include Lighthouse Island, a 22.5-acre privately owned island that houses the Sherman Memorial Lighthouse and offers tours, a boat launch, a fishing pier, and a one-mile biking and walking trail. There is also the Tionesta Library, and the Allegheny National Forest surrounds Tionesta on two sides. The forest is a popular hunting and recreational spot, spanning over 500,000 acres of land. Local accommodations include campgrounds, cabins B&Bs, and other locally-owned ins.
The Forest Area School District serves all of Forest County, with the West Forest School providing Tionesta students with a pre-K-12 education.
