About Newport News

Newport News is a city with a long and fascinating history. It was founded by the early colonists of Jamestown and has been around since at least 1621. Located on the Virginia Peninsula at the southeastern end, on the north shore of the James River, Newport News remained a rural area until after the Civil War when railroads and shipbuilding moved in. Today, it's part of the thriving Hampton Roads metropolitan area and is home to over 180,000 people.

One of Newport News' most significant contributions to American industry is its shipbuilding legacy. Newport News Shipbuilding, originally known as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company, is now the largest shipbuilder in the United States and a major economic force in the Hampton Roads area. The company has built countless ships for both military and commercial use throughout its history.

But there's more to Newport News than just industry - it's also a popular vacation destination! The city has something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiasts to culture buffs. With sunny beaches and abundant natural parks throughout the city, there's no shortage of places to explore or simply relax.
