About Mt. Pleasant

Mt. Pleasant is a borough full of history and character, located in western Pennsylvania southeast of Pittsburgh. It was first settled prior to the Revolutionary War, and glass production became the foundation of its local economy. Large deposits of a type of high-carbon coal called coke led to an economic boom in the 19th century, as coke mined from the area helped fuel Pittsburgh’s steel industry.

Large numbers of period buildings comprise the central business district of Mt. Pleasant, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It displays numerous architectural styles, including Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival.

A doughboy statue stands at the heart of the borough, marking the crossroads of Routes 31 and 819. Nearby Veterans Park holds a fountain and a gazebo, which hosts regular concerts throughout the year. Five additional parks in Mt. Pleasant provide playgrounds and picnic facilities, the setting for a variety of recreational sports leagues.

An annual Glass & Ethnic Festival on the last weekend in September fosters a sense of community through a parade, contests and pageants, public entertainment, and a closing fireworks display. Many residents are employed at family-owned businesses, including Levin Furniture, which has been a local institution since its founding in 1920.
